Anderson Paak is a creative genius not only in his lyrics and beats, but the way he performs is amazing too. I have been lucky enough to see him live twice and he really is a good time. If you get a chance to see him live make it happen. The song I have chosen today is 'Dreamer' by Anderson Paak feat. Talib Kweli & Timan Family Choir it is not a song that gets a lot of love off his Malabu album, but it is actually my favourite track for no other reasons, other then it makes me think and always takes me to a fun creative space.
Favourite Verse Rapped by Talib Kweli:
"Used to be scared of all my fears, Till I woke up from this nightmare, Now what become of a dream deferred, Now until we leave this earth, The music make your speakers burst, I always put my people first, It's deep how when I speak they say I'm preaching like I lead a church, No proper opposition, competition gonna need a nurse, My job as an artist is making miracles, To show you how to struggle poetic and make it lyrical, Crystallize the thought to make it clear to you, And make the revolution irresistable."
I love dreaming and I think it is a skill. A way to think into the future and bring the present forward to meet it. Without dreaming there is nothing to bring to reality. Everything ever created has to come from a thought or a dream, so I am not sure where along the way to become an adult we get this skill beaten out of us.
I Own a gym that is for women only. (It was not a personal decision, rather a business one, before you think I am a creep). We have a kids club in that gym with about 150 members and every day I try to spend a small amount of time in there to remind myself of what true creativity is. It gives me a real glimpse into a genuinely open mind. Everything kids do, see, feel and touch is a brand new expirience and they just enjoy life in their own way and with their own thoughts. I truly believe that every single adult can learn from kids and their open minds.
A long time ago I read something that anyone close to me is sick of hearing already, but I am going to reference it anyway. There is this thing called divergent thinking this is not necessarily creativity, but it is similar: it's the ability to see lots of possible answers to one question. This is a very useful skill within the process of creativity. They tested over 1500 kidergarden kids on their ability to practice divergent thinking. One of the questions that was asked was 'how many uses can you think of for a paperclip' 98% of students scored in the genius level that is 200+ used for a paperclip.
They tested the same kids 5 years later when they were 8-10 years old and only 36% scored as genius then another 5 years ago and only 10% scored in this category. They have also done the test with over 200,000 people over the age of 25 years old and only 2% scored in the genius category.
This Tells me that everyone can and has been creative. But as we seem to get older we lose this skill! It could be education, society pressures or just a change in the brain over time, but I refuse to except any excuse. Everyone is and has the ability to be creative! It is just like building a muscle: you have to use it to make it grow.
So Thank you Anderson Paak for reminding me regularly to dream and think creatively. Stop being so logical and rational and just find some time every day to dream.
