Happy New Years you crazy kids.
I am so excited to share this post with you guys because I finally had an amazing New Years Eve haha Lets face it for most people around the world and even more so in Australia the vibe around New Years Eve is 'lets just stay local'. At least that has been my approach for the last 5 years and I have been happy with that choice till this year, when my girlfriend was coming out from Germany and was spending her first New Years Eve in the famous Sydney, Australia.
So I actually had no choice, but to step my game up and plan something off the charts for New Years so it was time to put out the feelers to see what was happening. Therefore I asked around a couple of people who I really trust and they came back with Hotel Palisade. So we went back and forward with them and a range of other venues trying to lock in the best option. Eventually we locked in Hotel Palisade and it turned out to be so worth it.
Not only does Hotel Palisade have the best views in Sydney and when I say that I mean it. 360 degree views of Sydney and amazing floor to roof windows. The staff were next level, the food was off the hook and they really did not go cheap on the alcohol Cocktails and high end first pour spirits, as well as actual champagne, not just sparkling wine and it was all included in the ticket.
There was really no better place to spend New Years Eve with my Luisa and since it will probably be my last New Years in Sydney for a while, it was kind of an emotional night looking over the city that has had such a big part in who I am and holds so many amazing memories. I could literally see the first apartment I moved into when I was 18 in North Sydney and I got to spend it with some of my favourite people my girlfriend Luisa, old friend Katie and quickly becoming one of my best friends and flatmate Rachel who was going to sit at home and work on New Years till I got a call from the promotor at 3:30 pm asking if I knew a photographer. So Rachel ended up joining us for the night and it was actually amazing to have everyone near by. It was just a really powerful, meaningful, beautiful and surreal night that Luisa and I will never forget.
Anyway, enough about that. Here are my top 3 learnings from 2016 and my tips for 2017.
What I learnt from 2016:
1. Practice Being More Vulnerable
This year I met the most amazing girl I have ever met and that has come with a feeling that I have never felt before. Not always do those feelings need to stay inside. Letting them out is really important and I guess this year has been a big year in letting someone brand new into my life in a big way and it has been a big challenge for me but so amazing and rewarding at the same time.
2. The Power Of A True Partner
My dad and step mum have always been a big inspiration to me for many reasons. Are they perfect? No. But I do think that they have a special and unique relationship. They have always asked me through all my relationships: "Does 1 + 1 = 3 with you guys"? I never really knew what they meant by this. When they finally met Luisa they both said that girl is your 1 + 1 = 3 and told me that they have this bond that comes from the fact that they have grown so much bigger, faster, stronger because they make each other way better when they are together. With their connection and skill sets they make themselves 1 + 1 = 3 and I have truly learnt the power of a partner this year and the amazing feeling they give you when you wake up next to them and the energy and passion that comes from working together on things - it is like nothing I have ever felt before. Therefore I am truly thankful for my relationship with Luisa and so glad we have been able to fight through all the craziness that doing long distance for 12 months can bring.
3. Resourcefulness vs. Resources Resources are not why you did not do, what you wanted to do this year - it was a lack of resourcefulness. Although, I have had the least amount of time, I have gotten more done this past year than any other year before. Furthermore, I have spent the least amount of money I have ever spent since making my own. All due to a mind shift.
This shift came from watching a video from Tony Robins. I know this guys gets a bad rap, but if you really know what this man has done for the world and for people in it, I truly think you would find it hard to not like him. Anyway, I was watching a video and he said getting things done is not due to you not having the resource, it is down to you not having enough resourcefulness. What I personally think he means by this is: you have so many tools and gifts at your disposal, but they are hard to use and generally need you to dig deep to make them happen. That's why people tend to blame the big ones like money or time, but the truth is: you lacked resourcefulness because the best resources are emotional states like creativity, decisiveness, passion, sincerity and love. So when you work on these resources you will be able to raise money or find time. Therefore, this year I have really been working on my resourcefulness and it has also been a really good way to hold myself accountable for my actions.
Tips for 2017:
1. Acknowledge And Embrace Your Weaknesses And They Will Become A Strength
This year spent some time really thinking about what weaknesses you have in your life and also think about, if you hide them and why you do. The reason I ask this, is the reality is never as scary as the thought. You gain this crazy power from telling people and owning your weakness before people pick up on it themselves. I like to think most people on earth are kind and want to help, so look at your weakness and really ask yourself why you hide it from people. It is just as much a part of who you are, as your strengths, so don't be afraid of it.
2. Claim Your Gift This Year
I am a big believer that everyone walking the earth has a gift to give to the world. It is a miracle you are even here, so treat it as your right to change the world in whatever way feels right to you. I use the word claim with intention. I use it, because people don't give you this gift it is not like being a kid and just having to wait till Christmas day and you get lots of gifts that ultimately you have done nothing for. This is the kind of gift you need to take, you need to claim it. It takes time and energy. I am going to write another blog post soon on how to actually create and claim your gift, so if you want to see that let me know in the comments or join the mailing list to get notified as soon as it comes out.
3. Don't Find A Career Design A Life
This came up last night in a big way when I was in a very interesting conversation with one of Luisa's followers boyfriends. It was a massive reminder of why I do what I do. We were talking about how hard it is to find out what career to do next and the pressure and challenges that come along with that and it just showed me how society has this pressure and push towards having this one job and one set of skills and get paid one salary and sit at one desk and have one boss and I have never got this thinking. I spend my time training people how to create and design a life that is best suited for them. If one job is best for you then by all means do that, but most people these days find it polarising and hard to get their head around just one thing they are extremely passionate about. So do yourself a favour go to the beach, the park, the mountains - anywhere that allows you to think and be in your own head - with a notepad and think about how many ways you can make money. See if you can make money in more ways than one and design your life around making a little bit of money in a range of different places doing what you love and genuinely enjoy.
I could go on for days on things to add to your life this year, but I will cut it here. Again, let me know in the comments if you liked this and if you want to hear more about these kind of theories and life concepts.
HAPPY 2017 and I know this year will be your best year to date. Enjoy.
If you know someone that could learn from this article or anyone who is coming to Sydney and is looking for a venue that gives you a snapshot of the whole city, then share this article and I will give you a massive hug if I ever get to see you in person.
